Way up in Wayanad

The rooms looked right at the mighty mountains. It was quite a sight.

On the first day we walked around the area, saw the destruction of an earlier cyclone that destroyed quite a bit of the tea plantation. Chilled out with good food cooked by the cook assigned to us for our stay. Played some cards and recouped from the 5 hour drive.

Day 2 we woke up nice and early to trek the tall Chembra Peak. Our hosts were kind enough to pack a box of sandwiches for us. At 7 am the jeep was ready to take us to the point were we sign up and start the trek.

The Chembra Trek is a difficult one, but we were determined and a bit foolish maybe 🙂

On the way to the starting point of the trek we came across these cheerful women all suited up with bags, heading to work at the tea estates. The tea pickers work from 8 am to 5 pm on a day and earn about

About 1km into the trek we met our first guide. These guides are absolutely awesome. They are stationed at strategic locations through the trek route to encourage you and ensure you are safe. They are trained to handle emergencies and stay at their post of duty from 7am untill all trekkers have finished, which is typically around 3pm.

Without these guides I don’t think I would have finished the trek without any major injuries.

The trek up was hard, the trek back was harder. But at the end it was all worth it. When we got back into the jeep we were all quiet and the drive back was all about reflections and appreciation of the nature around us.

Day 2 we were sore….but we decided to go see the Edakkal Cave. Now no one told us how difficult this is. So we set off…. once we got there we found out that we now had a 2km uphill walk followed by about 350 steps to climb….. guess what…. we actually did it. Phew!

We also visited a tea Estate…it had such interesting facts about the various tea estates in India and how tea came about in India.

Such a wonderful holiday this was.
